I am wondering if 1/2" or 3/4" strips would work as well? My thoughts are that when I harvest honey by cutting the comb off I wouldn't be leaving such a large strip.Dadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16489907658231996798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27329001.post-66276007366828859432016-07-16T19:42:35.920-04:002016-07-16T19:42:35.920-04:00IMHO the lid of the TBH is the most neglected. That's why with my FL Style TBH the fully insulated, gabled hinged lid/cover/roof is key to them being brood machines in the hot urban rooftop apiary.
Spectricidehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16683960340882514199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27329001.post-65625443102483414522016-07-16T19:37:11.831-04:002016-07-16T19:37:11.831-04:00Sam is awesome! I made my first top-bar hive from similar material back in the 1980's and enjoy working with these hives. You open these hives like my other top-bar hives made from wide board. I have two hives. One has an ached roof, the other has an almost flat roof. So far they both seem to work equally well.
I have not tied mine down just because I am lazy, but do plan to do so one day using a screw and a loop of wire. I use wooden clay tools to cut the sides very slowly so bees can get out of the way. The clay tools aren't so sharp and don't seem to damage bees so much.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27329001.post-26739631421787629592010-08-14T10:29:02.907-04:002010-08-14T10:29:02.907-04:00The bees grow their comb from the top bar and don&...The bees grow their comb from the top bar and don't attach it to the sides. They leave bee space around for them to move. I do think occasionally they stick it to the sides but for the most part they do not. If they do, then you cut it off of the sides with the hive tool.Linda Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08089537760868691562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27329001.post-89830843573919136372010-08-14T10:25:20.727-04:002010-08-14T10:25:20.727-04:00Did he mention how hard it was to get the combs ou...Did he mention how hard it was to get the combs out of the stick & telephone wire contraption? It looks like you could detach it and you could roll down the sides, if the comb wasn't attached too much.Garyhttp://www.makingbeehives.comnoreply@blogger.com
